Recognyz Youth Awards winner

Melandi Slabbert was awarded the overall Supreme Winner title at the Hamilton City Council’s Recognyz Youth Awards 09 on Thursday 24th September at Founders Theatre. Melandi, a Year 13 student at Melville High School won the Youth for Youth – For Leadership of other young people section and then went on to receive the supreme award and a cheque for $2,000. Well done Melandi!!

There was a diverse range of award categories, from community involvement and volunteering, to leadership of other young people, innovative and creative ideas, overcoming adversity and achievement in arts, music or culture. The Recognyz Youth Awards 09 is all about recognising the efforts and achievements of our young people.

The Youth for Youth award was one of six areas which received over 90 nominations, including a nomination for our own Kapa Haka group, Mangakotukutuku.

The evening included an awesome array of performers, musicians, talented artists, ideas people and great leaders. It concluded with popular polynesian RnB, Hip Hop/Reggae band Nesian Mystik rounding out the evening.

The show had strong Melville connections. Co - compare Mareta Ford, supported by Rou Toa and “Shuffle” competition organiser Raksmey all helped ensure the evening was a spectacular success. Performing were DFC, BRDSR and Mask Infected including these MHS students; Marque,Tommy, Darwin, Matie, Codey, Harley, Billy, Raksmey, Aaron, Toni-Ann, Robbie, Frany and Destry. Raksmey, Tommy and Marque also took out Apple I-pods for their shuffling skills too. Well done Melville.
